I had just entered my teens when I went on a holiday to North Eastern India with my family. It was during the summer break before high school begun. We holidayed in Assam, Sikkim, Agartala,Himachal etc . Then we spent about a week in the charming town of Darjeeling. It is a lovely hill town with fabulous views of Mount Kanchenjunga. Also a great place for adventure lovers. I had my first brush with rock climbing here. And the love for it has grown ever more.
But as I look back, there is another thing I learnt here ,and that too has stayed with me. I remember a morning when we were driving up to a tea estate in Darjeeling. On the way, a group of kids, all clad in their school uniforms, waved at our car to stop. When we stopped and asked what’s the matter, they requested us to drop them to their school which they told us was on our way. My parents agreed and all these kids joined us in the car. While driving ahead, they told us that they walk to and from the school everyday but they try to find a lift to the school and sometimes they do get lucky and some passerby stops and offers to drive them to the school or back. Since back at home we were used to school buses, we found this rather strange and unsafe. But later on further conversation we found that the school was around 5 kms. away!! And it wasn't an easy walk being steep ,hill slopes. And these little kids walked all the way carrying their books, lunch etc with them. Neither of them could afford the local bus fare , many couldn't afford lunch and shared with their friends, nearly all of them used left-over uniforms, but it was the desire for education [Primary education is free in India] that made them undertake the long walk every morning. And the best part was they were all so positive and enthusiastic. It was a great lesson to take from them. Despite all the challenges, the will to study and to find a career to better their finances in future life, the determination was inspiring. And I learnt to value everything I have in my life as there are many in this world who have so little. And I also learnt to be content with what I have. And the satisfaction is so peaceful. I wish I could meet those kids again, perhaps one day I will. I am sure the positivity is still intact and so is the smile on my face when I think about this small but impactful incident. No wonder they say, travel is the best teacher. After all I learnt one of the best lessons of my life traveling :)

WHITE WATER RAFTING
River rafting in the dazzling white waters of the Himalayan Rivers is the best in the world, with great rapids that challenge the body, invigorate the mind and the spirit. There are many river-rafting regions here which suit both professionals as well as amateur rafters.
The magic behind white water rafting is the extreme and never-ending thrills in the untamed rivers. It’s that inexplicable feeling of incredible peace found in the act of flowing with the astounding current of the river. One of the most magnificent white water rafting experiences one can have would be on River Beas. The Beas River, one of the four major Himachal Rivers, rises from Rohtang Pass and flows through the Kully valley. Beas has, right from Manali till Jhiri, close to Bajaura in Kullu district, become a favorite among the river rafting lovers. On this 20 kms stretch, there... Adventure Travel Read More... |
